I find I make better decisions with nice cup of coffee in front of me The Training Dilemma.
How about you?
Please take this short-three question survey on this training dilemma.
Here’s the deal…
We plan to add live training events to our “toolbox” this year.
And I went for the things that mattered to me when I was sitting your shoes:
- Convenience
- Cost
- Content
But we want YOUR input!
Naturally, our first live event will be in Denver-close to the airport to be convenient for people flying in.
We are going to cover 12 contact hours of grant management materials, but schedule so that day one is a little longer so you can get out of there on a shorter day two without missing anything to catch your flight.
But here’s the dilemma, we know some people prefer live training and some people prefer self-paced learning.
Can you tell us which side you are on?
We have a short 3-question survey about this.

How To Choose Between Live and Self-Paced Training?
I wondered about this too, and here is what our research found:
There are four main decision points for choosing between self-paced training and live-instructor led training.
Here they are:
Pace
How fast do you want to move through the material?
Sometimes folks want or need more time to review content to learn the material most effectively.
Self-paced learning make is easy to tailor the pace of learning to the individual.
Urgency
How fast do you need to complete the training?
When there is a compelling need to get people trained as fast as possible, live training can be the best way to bring employees up-to-speed quickly on the new material.
Interaction
Will working with others improve your understanding?
There are many training topics that benefit from the exchange of ideas in the live training setting.
To overcome the natural tendency towards isolation with self-paced learning, look for a blended program that includes e-mentoring, Q & A’s and other ways to interact with others.
Complexity
Could a live instructor simplify the topic for you?
With very complicated topics, or when covering new or changing materials, self-paced learning has the advantage of allowing the trainee to spend additional time on the more challenging sections.
On the flip side, live training allows the employee the benefit of asking questions and seeking clarification in a real-time environment with a skilled instructor.
If you anticipate a new or challenging training topic, live training can be the best approach for efficiently learning the material.
